Dating in the Digital Age
No More Battle of the sexes
The DC electronic band Stronger Sex came to me in the summer of 2017, wanting a music video for one of their upcoming singles, Hassle. The song made me reflect on the dynamics of dating and relationships in our current digital age, where human emotions are forced to exist in a commercialized, multimedia environment. Genuine feelings are now often replaced by representations of feelings, through a selfie, a hashtag, or a text message, all of which exist, not directly in reality, but through a two-dimensional screen. Paradoxically, this two-dimensional screen acts as a portal to a multi-dimensional world where seemingly unrelated representations exist right next to each other. The smoochy-face emoji to your partner is a finger-tap away from a Youtube video of cats that advertises a Gordon Ramsay Teaches Cooking online masterclass before it plays. To illustrate this multi-dimensional space, I merged a variety of animation techniques, incorporating 3D animation, traditional 2D animation, rotoscoping, particle systems, and keyframing, allowing a distinct style to emerge.
